The Ask

To conduct a comprehensive analysis of the women’s apparel market, including current trends within the industry, competitive land scapes, economic factors, focusing on the stores Macy’s and Kohl’s. My partner and I developed a 6-month sales plan and a detailed assortment plan, along with a slide deck.

I was tasked with writing out our executive summary, conducting research, slide design, doing our analysis of Kohl’s and Macy’s, working on our assortment plan, and our vendor justification.

Process

  • With our research we looked into examining women’s apparel. We analyzed the competitive landscapes between Macy’s and Kohl’s. Along with evaluating Kohl’s customer preferences

  • Making this 6-Month Plan for Kohl’s we calculated the total seasonal sales, monthly sales, stock-to-sales ratios, inventory levels, markdowns, purchases, turnover, and gross margins.

  • After calculating our 6-month plan, we went and did some research on the categories seen in women’s wear at Kohl’s. We then looked into some of their top vendors.

The Outcome

This project helped me to understand the responsibilities of being a buyer, the purpose of having a six-month plan, and how important market research is. I feel that although I don’t plan to be a buyer learning this information helped me to be more well rounded in my fashion education.
